Soil Stabilisation Case Studies

Nature of Work: Access Construction

Summary

G2 Energy were contracted by their client, a wind farm developer, to provide EPC services on a handful of 500kW single wind turbine projects within the same locality in Yorkshire. The project involved upgrading existing access, installing new access, foundation works, substation construction and new HV cabling to the point of connection.

G2 approached Darlow Lloyd and Sons to carry out enabling works comprising the construction of the access roads and crane pads to four sites which Darlow Lloyd and Sons carried out using soil stabilisation.

The subgrade material along the route of the new road and crane pad was stabilised using an ultra low carbon binder from Cenin Cement and a layer of Type 1 was pushed out to act as the running surface. This Type 1 layer was then mixed with cement to provide the strength characteristics required by the cranes during the turbine erection works.

Benefits

Using soil stabilisation on this project enabled G2 to re-engineer the existing material on site to provide an enhanced strength to the road and crane pad through stabilisation. This meant that the amount of aggregate required to be brought in to site was significantly reduced, along with all associated vehicle movements.

Nature of Work: Soil Stabilisation
Project: Machynys Road, Llanelli
Client: Ty Croes Group

Summary

Ty Croes Group were contracted by Gwalia Housing to construct a series of new houses and apartments at Machynys Road, Llanelli in mid 2014 including roads, drainage, foundations and building works. As part of Ty Croes scope of works they needed to carry out a filling exercise to raise the levels across the site which were between 500mm and 1000mm lower than the required formation level.

Within the existing site boundary there was a stockpile of material previously excavated from other developments adjacent to the site. This material was a mix of made ground and cohesive fill and in its existing format was deemed unsuitable for use due to excessive moisture. Darlow Lloyd and Sons carried out lab testing and determined that the material was suitable for soil stabilisation and use within the finished works as stabilised fill material.

Darlow Lloyd and Sons mobilised a dust free soil stabilisation machine to site and carried out the insitu stabilisation of the stockpiled material using a pre determined mix design comprising of an ultra low carbon stabilisation binder produced by Cenin Cement Ltd. The material was treated in layers then compacted and tested by Darlow Lloyd and Sons to prove the required CBRs were met including 5% CBR in the bulk fill and 15% CBR capping replacement under the roads.

Benefits

Using soil stabilisation on this project enabled Ty Croes to use material previously deemed unsuitable for use, meaning that the material did not need to be disposed from site. There was also a reduction in the amount of aggregate imported to site. The stabilisation was carried out using a dust free stabilisation machine due to the close proximity of adjacent houses.


Nature of Work: Enabling Works & Civils
Project: Hill House Farm, Bridgend

Summary

G2 Energy were contracted by their client, a wind farm developer, to provide EPC services on a 500kW single wind turbine project in South Wales. The project involved upgrading existing access, installing new access, foundation works, substation construction and new HV cabling to the point of connection.

G2 approached Darlow Lloyd and Sons to carry out enabling works comprising the construction of the access road and crane pad which Darlow Lloyd and Sons carried out using soil stabilisation along with rehabilitation of an existing section of track using specialist in situ crushing machinery.

The subgrade material along the route of the new road and crane pad was stabilised using an ultra low carbon binder from Cenin Cement and a layer of Type 1 was pushed out to act as the running surface. This Type 1 layer was then mixed with cement to provide the strength characteristics required by the cranes during the turbine erection works.

Darlow Lloyd and Sons also carried out the cable trenching & foundation works for the turbine and substation, through close partnership with sister company Darlow Lloyd Construction. In addition to these works, G2 also awarded Darlow Lloyd and Sons the contract to carry out earth trench works and landscaping and reinstatement of the site following completion of the turbine.

This meant that the amount of aggregate required to be brought in to site was significantly reduced, along with all associated vehicle movements.

Through the use of Darlow Lloyd and Sons as single point of contact, G2 were able to reduce their sub contractor interfaces and limit the exposure to project risk by using the significant plant & labour resource and experience of the Darlow Lloyd Group to ensure that the full civils & reinstatement package was carried out on time and on budget.

Summary

As part of ongoing enabling and civils works with G2 energy on their wind turbine projects, Darlow Lloyd and Sons were carrying out a large amount of trench excavation into which G2 subsequently laid specialist earth cable into to assist with the electrical requirements of the turbines.

Despite carrying out a number of trenching projects using “normal” excavation machinery to the satisfaction of G2, Darlow Lloyd and Sons wanted to look at a different way of doing the works in order to provide further savings to the client.

As a highly experienced drainage contractor, the staff at Darlow Lloyd and Sons have a wealth of experience in trenched and trenchless pipe & cable installation and it was proposed to G2 that time and costs savings may be made if the earth cable works could be carried out with one of our specialist trenching machines which would enable the trenches to be excavated and cable laid in one pass. Trials were carried out through a variety of soil types including rock and these showed that the use of this technique would be beneficial. G2 immediately instructed Darlow Lloyd and Sons to carry out earth cabling works to two of their live sites.

Benefits

Using Darlow Lloyd and Sons to carry out the installation of cables such as for earth matting provided G2 with an extremely fast and efficient way of carrying out this portion of their works. Trenches can be excavated, cable laid and backfilled very quickly and with minimal disturbance compared to other methods when using Darlow Lloyd and Sons specialist machinery and experience. The trenching equipment is mounted on a road going tractor unit and is therefore highly mobile and cost effective to transport to site.

Project: Winterbourne, Bristol
Client: Dyett Group

Summary

Dyett Group were contracted by their client, BAM Nuttall to carry out demolition works to a railway bridge over the Swansea to Paddington line in a suburb of Bristol during the Christmas period of 2014.

Dyett Group approached Darlow Lloyd and Sons to provide operated and non operated plant hire along with haulage services to the project which was to be undertaken during the holiday period.

Darlow Lloyd and Sons provided a package of plant & equipment to the project including telehandler, compressors, breakers, and a range of excavators including 3t, 8t and 20t plus hammers. We supplied a number of CPCS operators on the project working across various shifts including night time work during possessions. We also provided haulage and disposal services of the dismantled bridge using our own low loaders.

Client: Lightsource Renewable Energy

Summary

Lightsource Renewable Energy own, operate and maintain the largest amount of solar installations in the UK and a large percentage of their assets comprise ground mounted PV installations, known as “Solar Farms” which are situated in fields, generally in rural locations.

Lightsource approached Darlow Lloyd and Sons to carry out vegetation management on a number of its live generating sites across the UK comprising flail mowing, strimming and hedge cutting works. In and around the panels, substations and inverters. Darlow Lloyd and Sons mobilised a team to carry out the works to an agreed schedule working from one region to the next during 2014.

The works were carried out using a range of equipment such as strimmers, tractors mounted mowers and self propelled mowers, all of which was transported from site to site by Darlow Lloyd and Sons own transport to ensure complete flexibility and the most productivity.

Benefits

Using Darlow Lloyd and Sons to carry out the vegetation management works provided Lightsource with one point of contact for their sites despite their location, significantly reducing sub contractor interfaces.
